The REPhRAME project has been awarded €15 million through the European research and innovation program Horizon Europe to combat recurrent urinary tract infections using viruses. The project is in partnership with multiple universities and medical centers across Europe. Professor Dr. Maria J.G.T. Vehreschild, Head of Infectious Diseases at Universitätsmedizin Frankfurt is the overall coordinator of the project. The project, which begins in June, 2026, is scheduled to last for five years. A two-step approach will be assessed in a randomized clinical trial. In the first step phage virus SNIPR001 developed using CRISPR to specifically target the most common causes of urinary tract infections (i.e., Escherichia coli) will be deployed. In the second step INTESTIFIX 001, a product of the Cologne Microbiota Bank will be administered to create a healthy intestinal microbiota and prevent recurrent infections. The project will compare three approaches: phage therapy alone, phage therapy combined with antibiotics, and phage therapy followed by microbiome restoration.
