A Japanese research team has developed a bacterial therapy that destroys cancer. The research team led by Professor Eijiro Miyako at the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, in collaboration with Daiichi Sankyo Co., Ltd. and the University of Tsukuba, used a bacteria duo named “AUN” to fight cancer. The two bacterial species, Proteus mirabilis (A-gyo) and Rhodopseudomonas palustris (UN-gyo), worked harmoniously to target tumor blood vessels (cutting off their blood supply) and also killed cancer cells directly. The team tested this bacterial duo in rats, against both murine and human cancers. AUN could provide a relatively safe option for patients with compromised immune systems or recalcitrant tumors. Professor Miyako hopes to begin clinical trials within the next six years.
