In a recent study led by Professor Alma Karen Lomeli-Lepe, researchers from the University of Guadalajara used bee venom to fight Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s disease is a neurological disorder that is caused by the degradation of dopamine-producing neurons, leading to cognitive decline, tremors and restricted movement. Levodopa combined with carbidopa has been used to treat Parkinson’s disease, but its benefits decline with long term use. The University of Guadalajara researchers are testing whether bee venom from Apis mellifera can improve the long-term effects of levodopa and carbidopa. The researchers demonstrated that parkinsonian mice treated with levodopa/carbidopa and bee venom had less motor and cognitive decline than those rats that received levodopa/cabidopa alone To read the study details, click here.
